Galerie Steph is pleased to present Sweet Surrender, Sharmistha Ray’s first solo exhibition in Singapore. Ray is an award-winning artist whose vibrant abstract paintings evoke her identity as a cosmopolitan citizen and artist of the diaspora.
Currently based between Mumbai and New York, Ray’s life is overlaid with a wealth of experience, having lived in the Middle East, Europe and the United States before moving back to India.
Her densely layered canvases exhibit richly textured surfaces with daring colour palettes, reflecting her own multiple social, linguistic, cultural and geographic ties. The sublime pastoral landscapes are poetic metascapes that reimagine the spirit of places both real and imaginary.
Following a successful solo show in New York and a TED Talk at the first official TED Fellows Retreat in Vancouver in 2013, Sweet Surrender comprises of recent abstract paintings that push the limits of abstraction.
These works, with their expressive layers of paint and unique colour sensibility, appeal to a diverse collector base around the world.
Her work is in the Montblanc Cutting Edge Art Collection and prominent private collections in India, USA, Italy and Australia.
